Member Update:

Members are informed that AIIB have been invited by the Council for Sustainable Development’s Support Group on Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy as a Supporting Organisation of the public engagement on long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Background

Council for Sustainable Development

The Council for Sustainable Development (“SDC”) is an advisory body appointed by the Chief Executive to advise the Government on the promotion of sustainable development in Hong Kong.  The SDC has in the past conducted a number of public engagement exercises, covering key sustainability topics such as air quality, sustainable built environment, energy savings in buildings, municipal solid waste charging and sustainable consumption of biological resources.  Subsequently the SDC submitted reports with recommendations to the Government, incorporating views collected during the engagement campaigns.  Details can be found at www.susdev.org.hk.

Public Engagement on “Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy”

Climate change and sustainable development are closely related.  Climate change affects the living conditions of mankind as well as the basis for social and economic development.  At the same time, society’s priorities and resources allocation on “development” also impact on Greenhouse Gas (“GHG”) emissions and climate change.  Pursuant to the Paris Agreement, all contracting parties should strive to formulate and communicate long-term low GHG emission development strategies by 2020 with a view to holding the increase in global average temperature to well below 2.0 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 degree Celsius.  As a responsible member of the global community, Hong Kong needs to draw up our own mid-century long-term low GHG emission development strategy.

For the above reasons, the SDC has decided to initiate a public engagement on “Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy”.  Through the bottom-up approach and engagement with stakeholders, the SDC hopes to arouse public awareness of the impact of carbon emission.  The public engagement would also provide a platform to gauge the views of the community in formulating Hong Kong’s mid-century decarbonisation target, as well as developing feasible strategies and actions to achieve that target, thereby contributing to the global decarbonisation effort.

Our Role as Supporting Organisation

  1. to disseminate information and messages about this public engagement to members;
  2. to promote the public engagement in its activities and programmes;
  3. to encourage our members to participate in the public engagement; and
  4. to tender views and comments on possible strategies and policies on long-term decarbonisation strategy.

Members' participation is very important.  We would appreciate it if you are interested to be part of the AIIB taskforce in this respect,  please feel free to contact us at adm@aiib.net.

Green Roof

Taskforce Meeting on 15th June 2016

Led by Sr Prof Edward Yiu Chairman of Executive Committee the AIIB, a taskforce meeting forum was convened for 15th June 2016 at AIIB's offices.  Participants included scholars and professionals joining from peer professional and academic organizations.  Discussion in the evening has focused on the provision of green roof without a BD Submission, viz.:

  1. a roof which is accessible from common area;
  2. reinforced roof with sufficient concret strength;
  3. standard flat roof design and not of cantilever, large span, etc;
  4. building fabrics and structures are sound;
  5. no building alteration work is required, i.e. just a placement of pots, not direct fixing to the roof, no blockage to existing drainage, no P&D alteration, not 100% coverage, less than 1 m tall;
  6. the building is properly maintained and managed.

In the forum, plenty of information sharing has taken place covering crucial points in green roof management and design.

All participants of the forum have agreed that, as an immediate action plan responding the society need, a technical seminar on the topic, namely, Current Practices of Green Roofing in Hong Kong : Case Studies on Safety Issue, should be organized.  It has been determined immediately that the seminar would be held on 22nd July 2016, between 7:00pm and 9:00pm at the City University of Hong Kong.  Details shall be announced once everything is to hand.

If you are interested to join the task force, and to be one of the speakers of the seminar, kindly contact Sr Dr Edward Yiu at chairman@aiib.net levaing your Name and Title, Position and Organization, and Paper Abstract as expeditiously as possible.
